At Bogannam European Automotive, Porsche transmission rebuilding is more than replacing worn components. It is a process of diagnosis, measurement, precision setup, restoration, and careful attention to every component of the assembly.
Our capabilities span generations of Porsche drivetrain technology—from the Porsche 356 transmission family, through classic 901, 915, 930, and G50 gearboxes, to modern Porsche PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung) dual-clutch transmissions and other later Porsche transmission systems.
Whether we are restoring an early 356 transaxle, rebuilding a 901, 915 or 930 transmission, setting up a G50, or diagnosing and repairing a modern PDK, each transmission is approached individually. The objective remains the same: understand the failure, establish the condition of every component, and perform the work with precision.
Precision Setup With Porsche Specialty Tools
Correct setup of the differential and final drive is critical to the operation, longevity, and noise characteristics of a Porsche transmission.
We have the specialty factory tools and precision measuring equipment necessary to accurately establish critical settings, including:
-
Pinion setting depth
-
Differential bearing preload
-
Ring-and-pinion backlash
-
Bearing preload and endplay
-
Gear and shaft clearances
-
Synchronizer and engagement component condition
-
Differential and final-drive condition
These adjustments are not estimated or simply returned to their previous positions. They are measured and set to specification.
Our access to Porsche factory technical information, specifications, procedures, and specialized tooling allows us to approach these transmissions with an understanding of how Porsche intended them to be serviced and assembled.
Porsche 356 Transmission Restoration
The transaxle in a Porsche 356 is an important part of the character and driving experience of the car. When working with these early Porsche transmissions, our focus is not simply on making the gearbox operational—it is on preserving and restoring the original assembly wherever practical.
The transmission is carefully disassembled so that gears, shafts, bearings, synchronizer components, differential, ring and pinion, housings, and related components can be individually inspected and evaluated.
Critical dimensions and setup measurements are established using appropriate precision and specialty tooling. Original components that remain within acceptable specifications can be preserved, while worn or damaged components are addressed as required.
For a restoration-quality result, attention extends beyond the internal components. Original fasteners and applicable hardware can be zinc electroplated and yellow chromate finished, helping retain the original hardware and appearance of the transmission rather than unnecessarily replacing it with modern hardware.
Modern Porsche PDK Diagnosis & Repair
At the other end of the Porsche transmission spectrum is the PDK dual-clutch transmission, where mechanical gearbox components work together with sophisticated hydraulic, electronic, and clutch-control systems.
Proper PDK diagnosis requires understanding how these systems interact rather than simply responding to a fault code or replacing an entire transmission assembly.
Our approach includes electronic diagnosis, evaluation of operating data and transmission behavior, and mechanical and hydraulic testing as required to determine the source of a problem.
Just as with a Porsche 356 or classic 911 gearbox, our objective with a PDK is to identify and understand the failure before determining the appropriate repair.
Everything Is Measured, Quantified & Qualified
Before a component goes back into one of our Porsche transmissions, we want to know its condition—not assume it.
Gears, shafts, bearings, synchronizers, hubs, operating sleeves, differential components, housings, and associated hardware are carefully inspected. Critical dimensions and clearances are measured and compared with the appropriate specifications wherever applicable.
Every component is measured, quantified, and qualified before it is reassembled.
This attention to detail allows us to determine what can properly be retained, what should be restored, and what must be replaced. It also helps us identify the cause of a failure rather than simply replacing components that may have been damaged as a result of another problem.
Restoration of Original Porsche Hardware
Mechanical restoration should extend beyond what can be seen inside the gearbox.
Whenever appropriate, we preserve the transmission's original Porsche hardware rather than replacing serviceable original pieces simply because their finish has deteriorated.
We have the capability to zinc electroplate and yellow chromate original hardware, allowing fasteners, brackets, washers, and other applicable components to be refinished while retaining the original pieces.
This allows a classic Porsche transmission to be restored both mechanically and cosmetically, with attention paid to the small details that distinguish a proper restoration from an ordinary repair.
Preservation Where Possible. Replacement Where Necessary.
Particularly with Porsche 356 and early 911 transmissions, originality matters.
Our objective is not to unnecessarily replace everything inside a gearbox. Original housings, gears, shafts, hardware, and other components are retained whenever their measured condition demonstrates that they remain suitable for service.
Components that do not meet the required standard are repaired or replaced as appropriate.
This philosophy allows us to preserve as much of the original transmission as practical without compromising the quality or reliability of the finished assembly.
The Details Matter
A properly rebuilt Porsche transmission is the sum of hundreds of individual details.
From pinion depth, bearing preload, and ring-and-pinion backlash to the condition of a synchronizer, the operation of a modern PDK system, or the finish on an original fastener, every detail contributes to the finished result.
Our combination of Porsche specialty factory tooling, access to factory technical information, advanced diagnostic equipment, precision measuring instruments, restoration capabilities, and a keen eye for detail allows us to approach Porsche transmission work systematically.
Nothing is simply assumed to be correct. Everything is inspected, measured, quantified, and qualified before it goes back together.
From the Porsche 356 transmission family through the 901, 915, 930 and G50—and onward to today's Porsche PDK—that is our approach to Porsche transmission rebuilding, repair, diagnosis, and restoration at Bogannam European Automotive.
